Implementing a Monitoring Platform for Enterprise IT Infrastructure
Centralized enterprise NOC monitoring across 250+ nodes, eliminating fragmented manual IT checks and reducing time-to-resolution by up to 60%.
The Problem & The Goal
Before implementing SolarWinds Observability, I found that the enterprise IT team relied on a fragmented set of monitoring practices using separate tools like Nagios and manual log-ins. Troubleshooting was painfully slow because identifying root causes required logging into multiple platforms—firewalls, switches, and VMs—which severely delayed response times during peak operational hours.
Resource overuse, such as CPU spikes or high RAM usage, often went unnoticed until a service failed due to a lack of historical performance data. Additionally, minimal and non-centralized log management created massive security blind spots, making tracking unauthorized access or failed login attempts completely reactive.
My objective was to modernize and centralize the monitoring of the enterprise IT infrastructure by building a Network Operations Center (NOC) that provided a real-time, 360° view of the network, servers, applications, and services.
Process, Research & Architecture Solution
I deployed a dual-VM architecture on the enterprise VMware vCenter, configuring one VM for the SolarWinds Platform Server and another hosting three separate SQL Server instances for optimized database performance. I then conducted a thorough network discovery using the Network Sonar Wizard to dynamically catalog over 250 devices via SNMP, ICMP, and WMI protocols.
To establish comprehensive visibility, I integrated Network Performance Monitor (NPM) and NetFlow Traffic Analyzer (NTA) to track bandwidth utilization, interface statistics, and redundant ISP failover. I also configured Server & Application Monitor (SAM) and Virtualization Manager (VMAN) to monitor Active Directory, web services, ESXi hosts, and VM resource sprawl.
For rapid troubleshooting, I utilized AppStack and PerfStack correlation engines to visually map application dependencies directly to underlying network and server health. I also established automated, threshold-based alerts with predefined escalation paths for Tier 1 and Tier 2 helpdesk support.
Tools & Technologies Utilized
- SolarWinds NPM
- NetFlow Traffic Analyzer
- Server & App Monitor
- Virtualization Manager
- IPAM
- Log Analyzer
- Network Configuration Manager
- SNMPv2/v3
- WMI
- VMware vCenter
- Windows Server 2022
- SQL Server
Results & Impact
- I successfully centralized over 250 critical server and network nodes into a single, 24/7 NOC observability dashboard.
- By deploying automated fault isolation and root cause analysis tools, I reduced the time-to-resolution for network and server outages by up to 60%.
- I supported enterprise ISO/IEC 27001 readiness by centralizing event logs, tracking configuration changes, and implementing granular role-based access controls.
- By enabling SIEM-ready log exports and advanced identity monitoring, I successfully laid the strategic and technical foundation for the organization's future Security Operations Center (SOC).
